“Rookies, you can come get your striped knit hat from Dan Leathers.” The colonel, Dave Woodley’s voice buzzes through the speaker at the end of the Marching Hundred’s rehearsal. Leathers waits on the makeshift 50-yard line in the stadium parking lot. He is swarmed by freshmen juggling their instruments and music flip folders as they reach for their free hat; a few stray copies of “Tequila” are blown away by the wind in the process.
As director of the Marching Hundred for 23 years, Woodley has watched Leathers become one of the most remarkable members of the band.
